The Liszt House is being renovated!

We will use the period from 23 October 2023 to 2025 to renovate the Liszt House and expand the exhibition space.

Landesimmobilien Burgenland (LIB) started work on the construction site in November 2023. Concert activities will continue as usual.

Building extension with more museum and multifunctional space

A construction site fence, lovingly designed by the children of the Raiding primary school, separates the event area. They have been studying Franz Liszt in class and were able to admire their artwork during a visit to the Liszt Centre. The new extension, with a total area of 720m², will provide additional exhibition space on two levels in connection with the Liszt Birthplace, as well as space for programme-related lectures or workshops and storage rooms. A catering area, a spacious orchestra dressing room, a back office area and more sanitary facilities will also be created. The extension will be built on the open space behind the existing concert hall.

Renovation and historic discovery

In addition to the extension, the concert hall and Liszt's birthplace, which currently houses the museum, will be renovated. The original murals of the house were discovered in one of the exhibition rooms during the research for the renovation concept. These are now being reconstructed and meticulously restored in cooperation with the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments. An archaeological team is also assisting with the excavations.

The extension is due to be completed in time for the start of the 2025 concert season in March.

Liszt-House Raiding:
Franz Liszt, his roots, his wings

Franz Liszt – where he was born

On 22 October 1811 Franz Liszt was born in what is now the Liszt-House Raiding. His father Adam Liszt served here as the bookkeeper of a sheep farm. At the time of Liszt’s birth the house, built of stone and wooden shingles, comprised six rooms, a kitchen, a storage room and a wine press house.

It was part of an early baroque ensemble and certainly the most impressive house in the small village of 600 inhabitants. Today the remaining building of the former Esterházy estate functions as a museum which offers an ideal setting to portray the origins and career of the young virtuoso. Here are the roots of the superstar of the 19th century and from here he started his career to conquer the world with his music and to capture the hearts of his audience. Guided tours, an exciting programme for children and an audio guide app provides vivid impressions of Liszt’s birth place.
