Permanent Exhibition: Franz Liszt.
Child prodigy, world star, Abbé

The Birth House

Part 1

The exhibition provides a very personal and intimate view on Franz Liszt by focusing on his origins in Raiding and his time of being a child prodigy in Vienna and Paris. His romantic relationships with Marie d’Agoult and Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein are presented as well as the lives and fates of Liszt’s children Blandine, Daniel and Cosima, the later wife of Richard Wagner.

Together with his daughter Cosima and her husband Franz Liszt played an important role in establishing the Bayreuth Festival. Additionally the exhibition displays Liszt’s profound religious beliefs during his adolescent and remaining years as Abbé Liszt. Various exhibits exemplify Liszt’s complex personality, including a replica of the baptismal font which was used for his baptism, his travel altar, his soutane collar as well as a number of letters written by his partner Carolyne where she reports on her weddings plans with Liszt and the following failure of their plans.

The concert house

Part 2

The exhibition area in the concert house focuses on the portrayal of Liszt as a celebrity and businessman. Specific areas such as marketing, merchandising and star cult have already been part of the virtuosity in the 19th century. The centre of this exhibition is the Blue Salon, originally located in Vienna, which functioned as Liszt’s accommodation and now offers a treasure chamber of souvenirs and cult objects.

Liszt’s concert tour through all over Europe and the so-called Lisztomania - the hysterical adoration of the piano wizard - are additionally presented. Museum guests also have the opportunity to visit the concert hall (unless the hall is occupied for rehearsals or CD recordings).

The exhibition visit will give you the opportunity to learn more about the person of Franz Liszt, his years as a prodigy, his restless life as a sorcerer at the piano and heartthrob and his late time as Abbé accompanied by his unforgettable music. Each room, chapter or object is marked with a headphone sign and a number. By entering this number you will learn stories about the composer and his time, accompanied by music and complemented by curator texts or accurate quotes. Immerse yourself in the acoustic and visual world of the exhibition, make your tour flexible and linger longer on the objects that have particularly captured your attention.
